Sculptor's Daughter

Description:
Tove Jansson's first book for adults drew on her childhood memories to capture afresh the enchantments and fears of growing up in Helsinki in the nineteen tens and twenties. Described as both a memoir and 'a book of superb stories' by Ali Smith, her startlingly evocative prose offers a glimpse of the mysteries of winter ice, the bonhomie of balalaika parties, and the vastness of Christmas viewed from beneath the tree.

“Now I had to make up my mind and that’s an awful thing to have to do.” Delightful and wonderful memoir of Tove Jansson’s childhood world. Jansson writes as her childhood self, with all the tenderness, jealousy and cruelty of youth, and where her play, pretend and fanciful invention is wholly real. It was delightful to read her childhood wisdom, whimsy, and strong opinions written as if they were the Truth (as they were for her young self). And this sometimes became a gentle reproof of her adults, when she spouted their prejudices as if they were the Gospel. The audiobook is particularly good, performed by Sara Kestelman. “The smaller you are, the bigger Christmas is.”
