Although I only give 3 out of 5 stars, this book should not be overlooked. The writing style and translation are clunky, which make it difficult to delve into and it reads like a telenovela of neverending, self-perpetuated drama. However, the author's attention to historical accuracy make this a worthwhile addition to the read around the world challenge and an important narrative of the tragic backstory of Suriname.
