Before the Coffee Gets Cold

Description:
*NOW AN LA TIMES BESTSELLER* *OVER ONE MILLION COPIES SOLD* *AN INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER* If you could go back in time, who would you want to meet? In a small back alley of Tokyo, there is a café that has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. Local legend says that this shop offers something else besides coffee—the chance to travel back in time. Over the course of one summer, four customers visit the café in the hopes of making that journey. But time travel isn’t so simple, and there are rules that must be followed. Most important, the trip can last only as long as it takes for the coffee to get cold. Heartwarming, wistful, mysterious and delightfully quirky, Toshikazu Kawaguchi’s internationally bestselling novel explores the age-old question: What would you change if you could travel back in time? Meet more wonderful characters in the next captivating novel in the Before the Coffee Gets Cold series, Before We Say Goodbye, releasing November 14, 2023! “If you could go back, who would you want to meet?” There's a lot of love for this book all over Bookstagram, Goodreads and anywhere that online reviews exist. Sadly, I didn't love it. The characters were likeable but rather one-dimensional. The stories were sweet and meant to be emotional but I didn't feel very moved. I thought that the repetition of the rules about time travel became tedious after a while and the writing style was quite simple (but maybe it was the translation) with too much telling for my tastes. An easy read with a charming premise that I may be judging too harshly. “It takes courage to say what needs to be said.”

Book #1 of the Before the Coffee Gets Cold series. Time travelers' wishes: 1. confront the man who left them, 2. receive a letter from their husband whose memory has been taken by early onset Alzheimer's, 3. to see their sister one last time, and 4. to meet the daughter they never got the chance to know.

Not being a fan of general fiction, I thought that I would challenge myself and give this a go. I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed this book. I liked the fact that the story never really left the cafe and the number of characters was limited, it felt like watching a stage play. I appreciated the quiet emotion of the characters and felt for them. Now I am left wondering who the woman in the dress is and what book she is reading!

I loved this book so much. The second part (the stories 3 and 4) broke my heart in so many pieces. So be careful! but overall a 5 stars read!!! Loved the story behind all the characters.
