I really enjoyed this book, right up until the end. It was easy to feel a connection with the characters, to empathize with their struggles as they tried to make a life for themselves in America. I especially empathized with Neni and her additional struggles as a woman. The contrast between what she gained and lost and what her husband gained and lost with the move to America was powerful. I thought she was such a strong and inspirational character, which is why I was so disappointed with the ending.
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
It was probably realistic to have her give up all the freedom and potential she gained simply because her husband decided they would return to Cameroon, but I thought it was a lost opportunity to empower a female character. Having her physically beaten by her husband and then almost immediately forgive him and acquiesce to his wishes reinforces this attitude of male superiority. However accurate or acceptable this may be in some cultures, it doesn’t sit well with me. |
