If you want to understand something of Australia’s fraught racial relations, this is a great place to start. For a couple of generations, middle Australia fairly successfully denied the existence of First Nations people in what Reynolds - a careful non-Indigenous historian of renown - describes as a great ‘silence’ leading to entrenched disadvantage of every kind.
