I really wanted to like this book, but it fell very flat. There were many themes that were touched on throughout but were never fully developed-- feminism, racism, the political unrest in British Guinana at the time, religion, as a few examples. Because of this, the book lacked any real depth. If this was not part of Read Around The World, it would have landed in the DNF pile. I appreciated that the author wrote it from the lens of her child self without a lot of adult interpretation and analysis, which made it a playful, easy read. I enjoyed part 1 and 2, struggled to get through parts 3 and 4, and thought in the end it slightly redeemed itself when the author circled back to her mother being a central figure in her life. Finally a theme I understood. Overall, not a bad read, but no real value added to my life & I was left wanting so much more.
