The Mabinogion

Description:
The 11 tales of the Mabinogion combine Celtic mythology and Arthurian romance. This new translation recreates the storytelling world of medieval Wales and re-invests the tales with the power of performance.

These ancient stories are well worth a read because of the striking differences from modern novels: bizarre and inexplicable events, episodic structure, and repeated actions, phrases and characters. I read them as an audiobook which really suits the oral/aural tradition of the stories. Modern translation by Sioned Davies. Includes one of the original stories on which Nicola Griffith’s Spear is based. One caveat: Women were frequently treated as chattel, and given as gifts
