This book probably only deserves 3 stars but since I read it right after A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid I am inclined to give it a higher rating by comparison. This book is everything A Small Place is not. It masterfully touches on racism, sexism and colonialism while juxtaposing humanistic and supernatural elements. It is beautifully written and a true pleasure to read.
