This book is wonderful!!! A lot is going on, but if you are careful when you read it, it ties together beautifully. The chapters alternate between the newest generation girl transitioning to male, struggling since losing her mother to a fire. and an immigrant from Syria at about the same age, two generations before. The symbolism throughout the book is mesmerizing. There is so much history woven into the full story - from the immigration of Syrians to New York's Little Syria, to the depression, to modern-day New York. Topics of art, birds, immigration, trans youth, and religion blend seamlessly. I learned so much from this story. I HIGHLY recommend.
