Lali

Description:
This anthology features writing by authors from Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Vanuatu (New Hebrides), Niue, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Samoa.

Lali is the first comprehensive anthology of new writing from the Pacific, including stories and poems which give a representative view of what has been written in English by Pacific Islanders. Albert Wendt writes: ‘I have tried to capture the essence and spirit of the beginnings of our literature before it ages, divides, branches into more "sophisticated" journeys and forms and techniques. Much of this new writing possesses the raw power of innocent anger, joy, and lament: the songs of pure spring water as it bubbles from the earth and before that water levels out and acquires the feel of ageing sunlight, the skill and guile of experience to weave and duck and swerve through rapids and towards the ocean.

‘I hope that in the future we can look back at this anthology and see it as a beginning.

‘I hope, also, that it will inspire more of our people to write and sing and paint and dance and explore the limitless artistic potential of our small islands nursed by the warmth and love of our mother, the Pacific.’

This anthology contains a mix of poetry and stories from numerous Pacific Islanders. Although it is a bit dated I found the stories interesting for the most part and the poetry easy enough for me to understand.
